Development of ePortfolios in project-based learning can be a valuable activity for student-centered learning experience. During development process an ePortfolio can serve as a way to track student progress and identify learning needs. After completion it can be submitted for assessment or peer review. In project-based learning it is a viable tool for formal and informal assessment.
Digital literacy is an essential skill for an online distance learner. It can be defined as “the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.” (the American Library Association Digital Literacy Task Force)
Digital literacy can be developed through content curation techniques which can assist in developing such skills as searching, evaluating and organizing resources to create a balanced digital collection. There are many tools that make it very easy for anyone to select, collect and share their collections of digital resources.
Last month saw us filming for the new postgraduate Professional Accountancy programme.
All our Moodle Virtual Learning Environments have now been successfully upgraded this summer with a new look and mobile-compatible theme. This will improve students’ experience of using their VLE and make it easier to access their teaching materials on screens of different sizes, and ensure they receive the latest security protection. We have already received positive feedback from both lead college staff and students about the improvements.

The Postgraduate Laws VLE used for the LLM Programme has recently been updated with a number of improvements. As well as a fresh new look, the course pages, and front page have been updated to include more relevant information and resources.

For those that don’t know, Moodle is the online learning platform in which all of our VLEs exist. Four times a year, users of Moodle who are supported by ULCC (University of London Computer Centre) meet in Senate House to discuss progress and give feedback. I am delighted to announce that the University of London has just published its annual report on its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) development and performances in 2014.
This 48 page report, prepared by our colleagues in the Academic Project Management team, looks at the data of 9 MOOCs (5 new and 4 re-runs) developed by the University of London in collaboration with Lead Colleges and also covers the objectives behind the University’s strategy for MOOCs.
This year’s Horizon Report suggests that over the next three to five years one of the key trends in accelerating technology adoption in HE will be a growing focus on measuring learning.
